Programs
Once again in 2004, the
David L. Fisher Foundation is honored and excited to be working
closely with One Step At A Time programs of the
Children's
Oncology Services of Illinois, Inc. (a 501c3501(c)(3) not for profit organization).
The One Step at a Time mission is to give children and adolescents
with cancer and leukemia as many normal childhood experiences as
possible, especially summer camp.
One
Step At A Time Summer Camp... 27 Years and Growing
July 2004 marked the 27th
season of Camp One Step At A Time, held at the Aurora University/George
Williams Lake Geneva Campus in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin
woods, the warm waters of Lake Geneva and the camaraderie of other
campers provide the perfect setting for an exciting experience. Summer
Camp is something the kids look forward to all year. It is a safe
and happy place where children who may have restrictions during the
year because of physical disabilities or medical treatment can enjoy
the great outdoors, share similar experiences with friends, old and
new, learn new skills and most importantly, just be kids.
In the Beginning
Since 1978, more than 4,500
children ages 7 to 20 years old, primarily from Illinois, Wisconsin,
and Northern Indiana, with cancer or leukemia, have participated in
one or two-week camping sessions. This is possible because of the
thousands of supporters who give generously of their time, service,
supplies, and funds. In 1978, Children's Oncology Services of Illinois
established the One
Step At A Time Summer Camp for children with cancer and leukemia,
the second camp of its kind in the U. S. Since the, Summer Camp has
expanded from a one-week program repeated each summer to eight separate
programs held during two consecutive weeks in July of each year. Programs
are planned around children's age groups and interests. Physicians,
nurses, medical technicians, and other health professionals donate
their time and energy to One
Step At A Time programs. Some participate as members of the
care giving team, while others function as primary cabin counselors.
For all of these volunteers, camp provides a relaxed setting where
they can interact with the children socially, as friends and mentors
as well as caregivers. Volunteers include those who have had direct
experience with childhood cancer and leukemia in their own families
or among friends. Camp gives these dedicated volunteers an opportunity
to apply their special perspective and sensitivity to campers' physical
and emotional needs.
